From Memoir to Play? Almost

The International Memoir Writers Association has a wonderful annual Memoir Showcase competition.

They invite memoir writers to submit a true story of five pages or less, and their judges select pieces that will be adapted as a drama and performed live on stage. This year was the twelfth year of the competition.

I submitted Chapter 2, “Grits,” from my hybrid memoir manuscript When I Was a Bilingual Writer Birthed by Black L.A. (Unsolicited Press, 2027)

I was elated to be included in the thirty-two honorable mentions after submitting my work. A select group of twenty-one other pieces will be published. And nine writers won the esteemed prize that results in a play adaptation.

My submission, “Grits,” was originally published last year in the literary magazine A Gathering Together. It’s a very manageable 1068 words; make sure you read it.

Consider submitting to the Memoir Showcase competition next year!
